What makes a great trainer?

Is it qualifications?

I've picked up several nationally recognized qualifications in the field of personal training and fitness instruction. But I don't believe this is what makes a great trainer.

Is it fame?

Many people believe that if you get featured in magazines, or sponsored by a supplement company, then that's a sure sign you must be good at what you do.

I've been lucky enough to feature in some of the most well-known fitness magazines in the world so far, and work with the awesome Optimum Nutrition. But I don't believe this is what makes a great trainer.

What makes a truly great trainer is to combine the two things above with a third "secret" ingredient:

Experience.

Yes. That first picture is me, back when I thought I "knew it all."

I'd hit the gym four days per week, and spend sooo much money on supplements (it was like an extra household bill!), but I was not happy with my own results.

Sure, my shoulders had a bit of muscle.

But did I look like I trained as hard as I was training? Did my body look the way I wanted it to look?

No.

And that's because something was off.

So I began researching. I discovered a love of digging through fitness studies, trying out new methods, and that early work created the foundation for my website you are reading right now.

The combination of my new mindset (I went from simply going to the gym, to going with a purpose) and my new knowledge started to reap great rewards.

Why do I believe this is the "secret ingredient"?

Because I truly believe in order to reach your full potential as a trainer you must first overcome your own hurdles, and achieve what you set out to achieve.

After all, would you take lessons from a driving instructor who didn't drive?

Of course not!!

The only way to fully understand what someone else might be going through at the start of their journey is if you have experienced it yourself.
